We have shown the rock genre through our video, album cover and website.
For each of our products we have shown how they relate to real media products and the conventions they follow.

VIDEO:

As mentioned in the group discussion video, to show our genre through our video we used technical conventions such as high contrast lighting, moving camera shots and instrumental close ups. We also used performance conventions with the way that the band members played their instruments and interacted with one another. The band performance in our video is similar to the performance in Misery Business by Paramore.

In the video for Misery Business by Paramore, the band perform the song in a room which is just them and their instruments. There are instrumental close ups throughout the performance, which have also been incorporated into our video.
Another convention of Rock music videos we have incoporated into our own video is editing to the beat of the song. In the bridge of our song, there are strong drum sounds which we used to cut our video to the beat.

This is also shown in the video for Misery Business, as the video is cut to the beat during the song. Our video is conventional as it follows the form of music videos as suggested by the theorists Vernallis and Goodwin.
Goodwin identified that all music videos:

Demonstrate genre characteristics

Have a relationship between lyrics and visuals

Have a relationship between music and visuals

Motifs which recur across the artist's work / 'visual hooks'

Notion of looking

Intertextual reference

This list of features applies to our music video, as shown in the table below

Vernallis' theory stated that music videos are constructed around 4 key concepts; Narrative, Editing, Camera and Diegesis.
This also applies to our music video:

Our video also uses the gender representation of females in rock videos, as our lead singer is shown to be a strong female character throughout. This is similar to another of Paramore's videos - Playing God. The narrative of this video shows the lead singer to be angry at four males, who she has tied up in the basement. This strong character is something which we have tried to replicate in our video.

Similarly, the representation of the males in this video is also something we tried to replicate. In Playing God, the males are shown to have wronged the lead singer, as they are tied up in her basement. The interactions between the lead singer and the males shows this as she is angrily singing to them. In our own video, we show the lead singer angrily singing at the tied up "boyfriend".
Similarly our video shows the lead singer angrily singing to one "boyfriend"

ALBUM COVER:

Our album cover also follows the conventions of the rock genre. The front of our album cover shows the lead singer of the band holding a board with the album title on in a 'mugshot' style picture. This connotes the rock genre as it shows the singer to be rebellious and 'against the system'. The album cover for London Calling by The Clash gives an angry and rebellious feel as it shows the guitarist smashing his guitar on the floor. Similarly their single White Riot has a cover which shows rebellion. The cover shows three men standing against a wall with their hands against it, in the position for a police search. This rebellious and angry theme is what we tried to show across our album cover.

The back cover for our album is also very similar in style to that of a real 'rock' cover. There is a picture of the whole band on the back with the song titles above them in rows, as opposed to the convention of other genres where the song titles are in a column down the side of the cover. This style of cover is shown on other back covers such as Florence and the Machine - Lungs, Oasis - Time Flies and Paramore - Riot.
On the inside covers of the album we have images which promote the band both as a whole and as individual members. On the inside cover we have an edited image of the eyes of the four band members, each of them with their own eye colour. This shows the individuality of the four members within the band, as each photo has the same black and white effect and they are all separated by a purple strip. Behind the disc we have the band logo which also emphasises the band as a whole, although the background of the logo is made up of the four eye colours from the other cover. This again shows the individuality of the members within the band.
Our website has the conventions of a debut artist's site but with the 'rock' theme running throughout. On our website we have lots of images of the whole band, as well as images of the band members individually. Our website also has plenty of interactive opportunities for our target audience; there is a comments box on our Gallery page, a Twitter feed which they can 'join the conversation' on the News page, links to Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr and a Competition page. The competition page is especially interactive, as the question isn't the conventional multiple choice. Instead the audience must answer the question "Where does Xen come from?". This ties in with the band identity for Xen, but also gets the audience thinking and relating to the band. As they are a debut artist the website also has recurring opportunities for the audience to 'buy into the band', whether it's merchandise from the band shop or buying the debut single or album.
Through use of the same theme, colours, logos and costumes we have constructed synergy through all our products.

Firstly, the theme of our products is a traditional rock/grunge theme. This ties in with our band's genre of music, which is rock. As mentioned in Question 1 the music video follows the form of a rock video with it's conventional use of high contrast lighting, moving camera and instrumental close ups. The album cover follows this theme as well, as the back cover has a photo of the whole band with the song titles above them in a box, as opposed to the song titles being down the side. Finally, the website follows this theme as it has a brick wall background and a handwritten font for the buttons and adverts.

Also, the band colours are present across the three products. These band colours are black, purple and white. The individual band members also have their own colours, which are highlighted in the video. Pandora wears the colours black and purple, whereas Xen wears black and blue. Although they are not shown in the video, Johnny and AJ also have their own colours, which are silver and gold respectively. They are shown on the homepage of our website and on the bios for each band member.

The general band colours of black, purple and white are present across the products, with the main costume colour in the video being black. In the website the background is black and white with purple titles on the pages and on the album cover the band name on the front cover is purple, the bars on the inside cover between the eyes are purple and the background of the back cover is made up from white, black and purple.

Thirdly, the band logo and the record labels logo are present in the different products. The band logo itself is formed from the skull in 'theDropouts' and the 'D' in Dropouts.

In the video, although it is only seen once or twice, the band logo is stuck on the bass drum of the drum kit which Johnny plays. The band logo is also present on every page of the website in the top left corner, with a purple glow effect on it (this also shows the colours synergy). Behind the disc on the album cover we have a large picture of the band logo, with a coloured pattern behind it.

Also, the record label logo (Burning Car Records) is featured on our website and our album cover, as it is the institution behind the band. There is also a link on our website to the website of the record label.

Finally, the use of costumes in our products helps to construct synergy. In the video, the lead singer wears a couple of outfits, her band outfit and her stained white dress. The band outfit that the band members wear is also the outfit they are wearing on the back cover of the album, thus promoting the video through the album cover. They also wear their band outfits in some of the photoshoot photos, which helps to fully build their individual and group characters.
The secondary audiences for our band are teenage boys aged 13-20, young girls aged 10-13 and young adult girls aged 20-25. In order to target our audience through our video, website and album we used our research into these age groups.
Throughout the video, the lead singer is shown as a strong female role model, as she stands up for herself and punishes the boyfriend for cheating on her. This strong attitude (and the fact her costumes aren't too provocative) promote 'girl power' and directly appeal to our audience.

Our website and album cover also appeal to our audience through their designs, as they both show the rock theme. Our website has the rock/grunge theme throughout, with the brick wall background and the handwritten font.

Our album cover also targets our audience throughout. The front of the album cover is a 'mugshot' style photo of the lead singer with the album name on the chalkboard she is holding. This rebellious theme appeals to our target audience as they are of an age where they begin to rebel against their parents and other authorities.

We exhibited our music video to a large group of our target audience originally, and then again to a 'focus group' of 11 people. The focus group filled out questionnaires and we recorded some of their thoughts after their viewing:

The questionnaires which we asked our focus group to fill in gave us some good feedback, as well as points on which we needed to improve. All of the focus group members recognised that the genre of the music and the video was Rock, which was our original intention. They also thought that the video fitted well with the song, as the it had good energy and a convincing performance. However, the group also thought that there should be a greater variety of camera angles and settings throughout the video, as it looked too similar between set-ups.
They thought that the video was likely to be shown on MTV and Viva and that it was suitable for a debut video as it established the artist well with it's close ups of the band.
The group gave the video and average score of 7.7 out of 10
Here is the questionnaire we asked the focus group to fill in:

As well as exhibiting it publicly to our audience, we also released the video online to our audience via social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. We then asked them for feedback via an online survey, as our research showed our target audience spend a lot of time online.
From our audience feedback, I have learned that I should have input more variation on the camera angles when shooting the performance. Also, some of the shots should have had more movement and been framed closer to the actors in shot. I have also learned that the audience thought our shots were too similar and that we needed to differentiate the set-ups more, maybe with lighting or setting changes.
I am pleased that the genre of music came across well and that the audience thought the video was a good fit for the song.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-34642954986997467322011-12-06T05:40:00.000-08:002011-12-16T03:39:55.509-08:00Question 4: How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? We used new media technologies throughout our project, from planning to the construction and editing of our video. We used a range of technologies, from Web 2.0 in our website construction and audience feedback to the lighting and sound systems in the studio for our filming.

Web 2.0:
We used Web 2.0 a lot in our project, as not only did we create our own band website, we also exhibited our music video online through social networking websites and got feedback through an online survey.

As well as making an online website, we also made a mobile version as our target audience is very technologically minded

Making our website on Wix was challenging to begin with, as I wasn't sure of how to properly use it in order to get the website to look how we wanted it to. However I soon got the hang of it and started to add photos and widgets. Here is a short video of some of the features I used when making our website:

Adobe Photoshop/ Premiere Pro:

Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 was another very useful tool for our project, and I used it a lot with the construction of the album cover and editing photos for the website.
The spot healing tool was especially useful, as it meant I could fix small parts of the photo (such as blemishes on the band member's faces) easily and get them looking professional. Here is an example of some pf the editing I carried out during this project:

To edit our video we used Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5. For my AS project I used Premiere Pro CS3 and the newer version for this project was much better for me to use, even though it was largely the same. I used the 'Brightness and Contrast' and 'Three-way colour corrector' tools a lot to colour grade the video, as we had to make sure the band members (especially the lead singer) were the same colour in the consecutive shots.
Camera:

We shot the entirety of this project on a HDRV1E camera in 1080p HD. I had not used the camera before and one particular aspect which it took me a little while to get used to was the exposure and the focus settings. As we were in the studio, Ihad to set the exposure to the right level so that you couldn't see the white walls around the curtains behind the performance. However, if I put the exposure levels too low I couldn't properly see the performance and if they were too high, it picked up gain and this lowered the picture quality.

Studio:

We shot our entire video in our school's Seward Studio, which has new light and sound systems which I had to learn in order for us to properly shoot the video.
It didn't take me too long to learn how to use the lighting in the studio, as it was quite straight forward. After being taught how to move the lights, I was able to position them so that they gave the look we wanted for our video. I had to make sure that all the band members were properly lit and that you could easily see them on the camera.

Positioning the lights

The new sound system in the studio was also very useful, although originally we didn't use it. For the shoots where we only had one band member in the shot we used and iPod and speakers to play the song (though the iPod version was full length and for our video we had cut some of the lyrics). This was a practical solution, but it didn't work for the full band shots as the drums were too loud and so the band couldn't properly hear the track.
To solve this problem, we used the new sound system in the studio during the band shots. This meant we could play the cut down version of the song loudly through the surround system for the whole band to hear.
Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-38826457341786706102011-12-03T10:12:00.000-08:002011-12-13T04:08:35.203-08:00Production Log: Week 5So here it is, the final week of production...

Sequence:
From the feedback we had gathered on our rough edit, I then started to alter the sequence accordingly.
Firstly, the pulpit shots were replaced with shots of the Boyfriend and the Mattress. This worked better than the pulpit shots did and also helped to establish the boyfriend motif a bit better at the start. I also input more close ups of the lead singer during the verses, so that they provided a 'visual hook' for the audience. I cross cut the drums at the start with the lead singer walking to the microphone at the start, which added pace to the introduction and matched the pace of the song.
Finally, I replaced some of the shots which had too much black space with similar shots that had less space and took away the guitar close ups during the breakdown of the song.
Now that the shots were in order, I began to colour grade. The main thing I did was to alter the brightness and contrast of the shots so that you couldn't see the curtain in the background or any of the white walls around the curtains. Some of the shots had differing lighting so I also needed to use the 'Three-way Colour Correct' tool and edit the shots where the band members were the wrong colour.
Here is our finished sequence:

Album Cover:
From our feedback we knew that we needed to change the back cover, so I tried to create a 'pencil sketch' effect on the photo. However, this didn't work out as I'd planned and so instead I tried to create a 'spray paint' effect. This effect worked for the background of the photo and tied in well with the rock genre so it was placed in our final edit.
We also needed to change the inside cover eye picture, so we put the pictures into black and white, except for the eyes. We made each band member's eyes a different colour so that they were each individual and stood out within the picture.
Here is our final album cover:

Website:
From the feedback we got, we knew that the Gallery page needed re-organising and so I put the Behind the Scene photos and the Photoshoot photos on separate pages and created visual buttons to each page.
We added photos of the individual band members onto the competition page, and also moved some of the features around on the News page.
The carousel we had placed with a feed to our Band Twitter didn't look very good in the corner of the page, so we changed it to a HTML Live Feed from the Band Twitter instead. This looked much better and we also changed the colours so that it fitted into the website.
We the received feedback on our rough edit:

The start is a bit loose, try to add more shots of Boyfriend and Candles

Show progression of narrative more

Pulpit shots don't seem to work at the start

Some shots need to be closer, stay a long way out too often

Change intro band shot, not so much black space

Include more of the Olivia CU, especially on first verse

Only show Olivia on the breakdown - don't have guitar close ups

Add an effect to the inside cover as it currently looks too dull

Add white background to the behind disc cover, extend heightboard to the edge of the cover template

Add barcode and institutional information on the back cover (We also inputted a QR code here)

We received feedback on our website:

Check your links work, the banner to buy the single couldn't be clicked on

Input a link to the record label's website

Sequence: By the end of the week we planned to have a rough edit of the sequence, so that we could see the order of our video and decide as a group what shots needed changing and where other shots need to be placed instead. Editing the sequence was quite easy to start with as we had a timeline of our sequence already planned from a pre-production meeting. This meant I could copy and paste the different shots from our original individual motif sequences and see how they matched up. We could also now input the new shots we had taken, such as the band shots and the indivual performances.
Unfortunately, we didn't quite finish our rough edit by the end of the week, so we hope to finish the edit on Monday and get feedback and edit our footage accordingly.

Album Cover: After taking our photoshoot pictures, we could start to edit them and begin our rough edit of our album cover. As Olivia had sketched a plan we knew which photos we needed to edit and place on the cover.
For the front cover of the album we decided to have the photo of Olivia holding the chalk board with the title of the cover on the front whilst standing in front of a heightboard. We finally placed 'theDropouts' text along the top of the cover to finish our rough edit of the front cover.
For the back cover we decided to put a full band picture on the back. Originally we wanted a photo of the band in their 'smart' outfits, although after editing and placing it on the back cover I didn't think it looked right and so we decided to put one of the band pictures in their video outfits on instead as it looked better. We then placed the song titles in a handwritten font along the top of the back cover, ready for feedback.
For the inside covers, we decided to have our band logo behind the CD and a picture of the band member's eyes on the inside cover. I edited the inside cover so that the faces were separated by purple strips, in order to tie in with the band identity.

Website: We started editing our website by choosing our template. We decided to use a template where the information is placed in a square in the middle of the page with a brick wall picture behind, as this fitted in with the genre of the band's music. I then created our navigation bar and designed our pages. Our pages were as follows: Home, About Us, News, Events, Gallery, Videos, Competition, Shop
On every page we had the title written in the same font in the same colour, as well as our band logo. Along the bottom of the website I put links to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, as these social networking sites were part of our online marketing campaign.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-63648450435219744942011-11-12T03:43:00.000-08:002011-12-11T07:45:34.271-08:00Production Log: Week 2Monday: I started the week by filming the shots for the boyfriend motif. We asked Michael to come in and be the boyfriend for us, and he was enthusiastic for the shoot.
We were happy with the shots we took, and there was even a little bit of time at the end for me to film some of the Voodoo Doll motif, although after filming and watching back our footage I don't think we will use it in our actual sequence as it doesn't seem to fit.
After school we stayed to edit our shots with the boyfriend, as well as shooting our pulpit motif shots. Again, we were pleased with the shots we had taken and so will incorporate them into our sequence.

Tuesday: Today we filmed Frank's solo shots with his bass guitar. After the original band filming from the previous week we knew what we needed to improve on with the band members shots. We took numerous takes from different angles and distances, with long shots of Frank in the spotlight to close ups of his hands as he plucked the strings.

Wednesday: On Wednesday we edited the footage we had so far into individual sequences, so that when it came to our final sequence we could input the individual sections where we wanted. Now that we had the majority of our footage we could start edited our final sequence

Thursday: On Thursday we did our photoshoot. At lunchtime I photographed the band together and individually in their band outfits in a variety of poses. I then photographed them after school in a 'smart' outfi. The photoshoot went well and we took a lot of photos. We will start editing the good ones next week to use on our website and for our album cover.

Friday: On Friday we turned up to school at 7am to start the set-up and shoot for our band performance day, as the shots we took in the first week weren't as good as we'd hoped. We started our filming at 8:15am and went right through to 11am. In this time we filmed our band performance shots, Ben's solo (now that he had all his strings) and Ming's solo. We were tired by the end of the filming, although at the same time we felt fulfilled that we had completed all the main filming for our video.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-49579412073887270612011-11-05T05:39:00.000-07:002011-12-11T07:43:56.429-08:00Production Log: Week 1Monday: We learnt how to use the website www.wix.com effectively to create a website for our band. I found this fascinating as there was so much to customise so that your band's page could look exactly how you wanted it to.
We then met as a group and finalised the schedule for the filming in the studio, making sure we had everything we needed for each day

Tuesday: Our first day of filming. We set aside today for filming the coffin set-up shots. Although to begin with we were behind schedule, we soon managed to get back on track and completed all the shots we needed with enough time to spare so that we could also film the candle/seance shots.I filmed the majority of the shots in the Seward Studio and Frank helped with the playback of the song. Later on Frank filmed the candle shots and the moving camera for the coffin set-up whilst I sorted the playback.
Using this footage, we could then start to roughly edit to our track and therefore see what we needed to do differently with other set-ups

Wednesday/Thursday: On Wednesday and Thursday we edited the footage we had taken from Tuesday into a rough edit (although unfortunately we were meant to film some more on Thursday but we had been double booked and needed to cancel)
From editing our footage I saw that we needed to frame our shots at a closer distance so that we could see more of Olivia's face whilst she was lip-syncing.

Friday: Our schedule for Friday was probably the busiest compared to the rest of the week. In the morning we shot the solo performance set-up for Olivia. We managed to film the majority of shots for the solo performance before we then moved on to Ben's solo performance. This started well, until two of the guitar strings snapped and we had to abandon the rest of the shots as we couldn't do any close ups of Ben.
Finally, we got the whole band together and shot the entire band performance shots. This was a lot more time consuming than I had first thought, and we didn't manage to get as many takes as we would have liked. However, we still have bookings for the whole band so we aim to shoot the whole band performance shots next week.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-81362418915152271682011-10-07T06:02:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.924-08:00Group Meeting 2Agenda: To organise all aspects of our project ready for the pitch (which we hope to do on Monday)

The main aspect of our project which we needed to finalise for the pitch was the marketing for the band's debut. As a group we created a brainstorm for the campaign, which stretched across different types of media; Radio, TV, Magazines, Online etc.
Here is our brainstorm from the meeting:

As we had now finalised the main aspects ready for our pitch, we also took some time to think about possible band, album and record label names as part of our marketing campaign.

Band Names:

The Dropouts

Melted Sin

The Beautiful Damned

Album Name:
For our album cover we were thinking, to tie in with the theme of the lead singer being a criminal, that the main photo should be a mugshot of the lead singer. On the mugshot board we were going to write the band name and the album name. For the album name we thought of "You'll Love Me When I'm Famous", which we all liked as it ties in with our main audience of the disenfranchised youth of today.

Record Label:
In our initial idea for our music video we wanted to have the lead singer set fire to a car, but unfortunately this was too impractical. To keep with this destructive idea, we thought of naming our offshoot record label "Burning Car Records".

Possible Track Names:
Finally, we planned some songs to put on the track list on the back cover of the album, using typical rock song names for the list. We also went for the conventional 10-track list on the CD.
Here is our initial track list:

Dystopian Living

You'll Love Me When I'm Famous

Goin' Down

Ugly Faces

On The Run

White Wine and Red Roses

When The Wind Blows From The East, Cut Down The Willow Tree ft. Slash

If Looks Could Kill

Despots And Killers ft. Billy Joe Armstrong

The Devil Made Us His Children

All the tracks on the above list are subject to change, although at the moment we are very happy with them. You will also notice that two of the tracks have featured artists. We have decided to do this and have chosen artists who we think both the core and secondary audiences can recognise, appealing to them more.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-44593782017944978522011-10-05T07:27:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.924-08:00Treatment for the Pitch

Here is our first draft of a possible outfit for the lead singer of our rebellious girl band, as drawn by Frank.
I had the idea that in order to give the band an identity as a group, as well as giving each member a unique identity, the members should be colour coordinated so that they predominantly wear black, but mixed with a colour unique to them.
This example shows how the lead singer will have purple as they're colour.

Here are the first drafts for the rest of the band, also drawn by Frank. As you can see, each of the members has their own 'rock' style and unique secondary colour i.e. the drummer is silver, guitarist is gold and the bassist is light blue.
I think the draft drawings fit to our genre and band image we want to create as the outfits have the look of a rock band. The lead singer's outfit fits in with our primary target audience of teenage females as it isn't too revealing.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-11554804562678293462011-10-04T04:01:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.925-08:00Group Meeting 1Agenda: To finalise the idea for our music video, alter any parts that are impractical and decide on the final cast, costumes, locations and props ready for us to pitch our idea.

Final Idea
The final idea for our music video is very similar to our initial idea. However, some of the features have been slightly edited to make them more practical. The performance aspect of the video has mostly stayed the same, with the idea of the band playing in a dark room with spotlights to show the isolation and to reinforce the idea of her confessing and being locked up. Our idea for the ending has now been changed, as instead of showing the singer alone in the darkness, we will now show the singer blowing out the candles in the dark room, causing a blackout. We felt this ending was much more ambiguous and would therefore work better.
The narrative has also mostly stayed the same, although now in consideration of time and practicalities the flashback during the middle bridge will be done in a 'Sin City' style, with the shots being in black and white but with some colours showing through. Instead of a fairground we are thinking of maybe just using a park as it would be easier to access and film in.
We are still hoping to do the 'drawn animation' idea, which will mean we won't need an actual location as we can draw that into the background whilst editing.

Locations

Studio / Dark Room - Band performance area

Wooded area - Grave scene

Three Lions - Lightning Seeds

This video by The Lightning Seeds is a clear example of how intertextual references are used in music videos. Although this song is a football song about the 1998 World Cup, the music video still has many intertextual references, which are there to make the audience feel nostalgic about past England football matches. The music video also references the Euro '96 song by the same band, as it has a very similar music video and the same tune, just with different lyrics. The song we have chosen is Goin' Down - The Pretty Reckless:

Lyrics:

Hey there Father, I don't wanna bother you
But I've got a sin to confess
I'm just sixteen if you know what I mean
Do you mind if I take off my dress?
Don't know where to start, let me get to the good parts
Might wanna cross up your legs
I've got envy, I've got greed, anything that you need
And I'm not above having to beg

There was this boy who
Tore my heart in two
I had to lay him
Eight feet underground

I need someone to save me
'Cause I am goin' down
And what I need is someone to save me
'Cause I am goin' down
All the way down

Well hey there Father, there is just one other thing
I have a simple request
I hear you know God, could you give him a nod
In my direction, I'd be in your debt
Perhaps there is something that we could work out
I notice your breathing is starting to change
We could go in the back behind all these shacks
And these bibles and get out of this cage

There was this boy who
Tore my heart in two
I had to lay him
Eight feet underground

I need someone to save me
'Cause I am goin' down
And what I need is someone to save me
'Cause I am goin' down
All the way down

I didn't wanna do it Father
But I caught him with another woman
In the bed I made
And so I put him in a grave
And now there's no one left around
To get me off when I wanted to drag
The next day on the television
They identified him by the circumcision
That I made and now I'm on the run but wait
Why did I have to go and kill him
When he was the best I ever had?

All I need is someone to save me
'Cause I am goin' down
What I need is something to save me
'Cause God I'm goin' down
All the way down

I'm going down
All the way down

Initial Idea
The idea for our music video is that the artist is performing the song in a black room, with different lights on different objects. Along with the performance, there is also the narrative of a flashback of the story being told by the artist which is edited in.

For the performance, we will have the band members performing to the camera in a dark room, which will have lit candles to give the idea of a church / religious place. Throughout the song the performance aspect of the video will show all of the band members in typical 'rockband' poses playing their instruments. At the end of the song, the camera will zoom away from the lead singer to show the dark room with the candles, except only the lead singer will be lit, so it shows her to be alone in the semi-darkness.
The narrative will be intercut throughout the video. The video will be in the style of a flashback, which will start with the female character in a wood next to a shallow grave. This will then move on to the girl getting angry and destructive and smashing objects / burning photos of the her and the boy together.
During the bridge "I didn't want to do it....Best I ever had?" we will have a short, animation-style narrative which shows the girl with the boy having a good time (our original plan is for them to be at a fairground, but this may not be very practical nearer the time) and then cuts to the girl finding the boy with another girl.
Finally, after the short pause before the finale there will be more smashing and destruction before the song ends and she leaves the grave in the wood.
These 4 concepts are:
1. Narrative
2. Editing
3. Camera movement and framing
4. Diegesis

I have tried to apply this theory to one of my favourite music videos - Coffee and TV

Narrative:
The music video's narratvie is based around a concept - A milk carton goes to the city in search of a lost son. At the start of the video, the carton is on the table of the son's family. After trying to cheer them up by dancing around, he realises they are sad because their son is missing. He then sets out on a journey to find the son, asking people along the way for help. As he wanders through the city, he sees a 'female' milk carton on the other side of the road and falls in love with it. Unfortunately, his joy is short-lived as the 'female' carton gets trodden on by a pedestrian and squashed. It then shows the carton walking down an alleyway at night time. The milk carton is scared as he sees broken cans (which are made to look like faces) and glowing red eyes from the dustbins. He backs into a corner, which has a small window. He looks through the window and sees the missing son, playing as a member of Blur. The carton falls through the window and the son sees his 'missing' photo on the side. After realising how worried his family must be about his whereabouts, he runs off and catches the bus home. As he enters the house, he drinks the milk from the carton and drops it into the bin. The final part of the song shows the now empty carton waving to the camera with a fulfilled look on his face. After the song has finished, there is a bit of comedy as it shows an 'angel carton' with wings flying up into the clouds where he meets the 'female' carton from earlier in the video.

Editing:
The video is edited to show the milk carton as the main character, as it follows it around on its journey. There isn't much editing to the music, showing how the video amplifies the song, rather than being illustrative. The editing is more revealing of what the carton may be looking at and draws the audiences attention to important events surrounding the milk carton. The shots are relatively long for a music video, which reflects the slower tempo and the 'sad' feel to the song.

Camera:
The camera follows the main character, the milk carton, throughout the video and gives the audience the idea that they are looking at the world through it's eyes. During its journey, the carton encounters numerous 'perils' such as a motorbike and broken cans on the street. To most humans these 'perils' are actually just things we encounter everyday, but to the milk carton they are shown to be quite frightening through the Low Angled camera framing.

Diegesis:
The song for the music video is non-diegetic for the majority of the video, and it isn't until towards the end of the song that we see the band performing. This makes the audience focus on the journey of the milk carton and not get distracted by the performing of the band, which would ruin the reveal that the missing son is actually Blur's guitarist. The lyrics match up with the visuals a few times during the song e.g. "There's people there who will hurt you, Because of who you are". This line is sung as the video shows the milk carton watching a pedestrian drink milk from an almost identical carton before throwing it away.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-7455699868878714912011-09-24T02:31:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.926-08:00Website Researchwww.onedirectionmusic.com
The audience interactivity is also shown in the Gallery and Videos pages. The Gallery has lots of photos of the band, the individual members and behind the scene shots. It also has audience uploaded 'Fan Art'. All of the photos can be commented on and shared via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The Videos page is similarly interactive, with their debut video being central on the site. However, it is part of a playlist, so there are more videos for the audience to watch whilst enojoying the website.

Finally, there is the 1D Shop. This site is similar in style to the main website (as you can see from the main photo of the band). This is a god way of getting the audience to spend money, as by advertising the merchandise on the website they know they are directly appealing to the correct target audience. There are a whole range of products, from t-shirts to pendants to calendars featuring the band.
Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-14302330163904548752011-09-22T08:17:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.926-08:00Rock Album Cover Research

This is the album cover for Misery Business by Paramore. As you can see from this cover, the artwork is quite rough and scribbly. On the front cover there is the central picture of the band, who are mainly looking directly at the camera. The font of the album name matches the style of the cover, whereas the band name is in a formal, sans serif font.
For our album cover, I think we should go for similar features. I think our front cover should have a main photo of the band, in their own unique poses. I also think the album font should be quite scribbly so it fits in with the 'Rock' style. The back cover will also fit in with this style, although I think the back cover should have more imagery, as I don't think the blank back works in Paramore's cover.

Here is the front cover for another 'Rock' album cover from the band Garbage. As you can see, this album is a bit more obscure and just shows parts of the human body around the red background. Again, the band name and the album name are very clear, in order to sell the artist.

Although I think this style is eye-catching and can be effective, I still prefer the covers with the artist pictures, as I believe it sells the band more effectively and builds a better sense of band identity.
Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-92158037325100638312011-09-22T07:29:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.926-08:00Album Cover Research

A range of album covers, which differ depending on
genre and target audience

After researching different album covers, I have noticed that they all have similar features. These are:

Images (either of the artist/band or something more symbolic)

Band name

Album name

A unique element which differs them from the rest

Institutional information, track names etc.

However, I have also realised that the album covers differ depending on the target audience for the band or the genre of music. Here are some examples:

Example 1: Barry Manilow - The Greatest Songs of the Seventies

Genre: Classic Pop/Rock

Example 2: Glee Cast - Songs of Glee Volume 1

Primary Target Audience: Young females / males who watch the show
Genre: Pop

Example 3: Westlife - Back Home

Primary Target Audience: Young adult females
Genre: Boyband

As you can see, these three album covers have the same conventions, but are all different in their style. For example, the Glee album has very bright colours and shows all of the cast members as they would in the show. This appeals to the target audience as fans of the show can see that the album is directly related to the programme and they will buy it.
The Barry Manilow album, however, is more bland and the colours are duller. The font is more formal and easy to read, as it is aimed at an older audience. The central focus is the artist, unlike with the Glee album where the central focus is the TV programme.
Similarly, the Westlife album is also centred on the band. However, as the genre is different to that of Barry Manilow, the pictures are different. The artist and album names are central and the band are in a conventional 'boyband' pose.Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-88500371378152419312011-09-21T03:46:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.926-08:00Critical Response AnalysisOK Go - Here It Goes Again (2005)
What works? What, in your opinion, is effective about this music video?

Dance is choreographed on treadmills

Band members are all wearing bright colours

The entire video is one wide shot of the 8 treadmills

The setting is very simple, which draws the audiences attention to the band and the choreography in the foreground

What doesn't work? What, in your opinion, could be improved / done differently?

As the whole video is a single wide shot, there is no feeling of being with the band as there are no close up shots

It isn't obvious at the start who the singer is, as there are no close ups so you cannot instantly tell who is singing

No performance shots of the band, so it almost seems like a dance video rather than a music video

Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018167722754947470.post-20747400823738501732011-09-20T03:34:00.000-07:002011-12-07T05:37:12.926-08:00Track ResearchMy confirmed group for this project is myself, Olivia Cole and Frank Tan. Preliminarily we were put together as a group so we started to shortlist some ideas for our band identity and for songs to make a music video for.

Almost straight away Olivia came up with our main band identity for the video, which was a rebellious girl rock band. Frank and I both agreed that this would be a good idea to do, as there is a large gap in the modern market for girl rock bands. We also decided that as our genre was female rock, our primary target audience would be teenage girls who liked the genre of rock music, and that our secondary audience would be teenage males who also interested in that genre.

Once we had our band identity and target audience in mind, we started to shortlist some possible tracks for our video. Here are some of our ideas:

Track 1: Goin' Down - The Pretty Reckless

Positives:

Fast-paced guitar and drum solos, which mean there are lots of good opportunities for whole band performance shots as well as individual ones.

There is a pause in the song before a 'drop' where the guitars and chorus come back in, which would be good for our rebellious 'destruction' idea as we could possibly have an effect on the smashing which kicks in along with the music

Negatives:

There are references to the Catholic Church during the song's verses, which could be problematic as they may be seen as offensive. However, we are bearing that in mind with our video plan and are trying to find a way around the references with the visuals

Track 2: Dull Life - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Positives:

Starts of slowly and then builds up, which will give us the opportunity to build up the tension and shots in our video

The irony of the lyrics talking about how dull life is etc. would be so massive with our video idea of the band being rebels and destructive.

Negatives:

The song is a bit too long and repetitive to keep the audience focussed on the action which means we would need to do a lot of different set-ups and narrative-performance cutting. Although this could work, it may not be the best song to do practically

Track 3: My Medicine - The Pretty Reckless

Positives:

The lyrics tie in well with our original idea of a rebellious girl at the aftermath of a party

Negatives:

The song isn't fast paced enough for use to make a rebellious 'destruction' kind of music video. It also has a lack of guitar and drum solos where we can put in 'Rock Band' performance shots.

This video shows how the world is changing all around, but actually for the worse. This idea is shown through the visuals of death throughout the video, as well as the lyrics of the song.

"Thinking what a mess we're in, hard to know where to begin"
"Nothing's gonna change the way we live,
Cause we always take but we never give"

There is imagery of death throughout the video. Firstly, there is a raven which is shown to fly away from the action, as if it were leaving. Ravens are symbols of death and English legend states that when the "Ravens leave the Tower [of London], the Kingdom will fall".

There is also the imagery of cockroaches in the room, which grow in number as the video progresses. Again this links to the more myths, as it is said that cockroaches are the only living thing that can survive a nuclear war. The growing number of cockroaches, contrasted with the fact that Jamiroquai is on his own for the majority of the video, shows the idea that the world is becoming more hostile.
